Giving Tuesday: Step Out:Walk to Stop Diabetes

In honor of Giving Tuesday, I want to talk about an organization that is very near and dear to my heart.  My oldest son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just a week after his 6th birthday, and in the first month of kindergarten.  It was absolutely one of the most difficult times for not only Ryan, but for our entire family, as we slowly adjusted to a whole new life…a new “normal”.  (Read more about my family’s journey.)

Living with diabetes as a child requires you to grow up very quickly.  You are suddenly in the middle of a world filled with medications, dietary restrictions, while learning to count every carb that goes in your mouth, adjusting at school and at friends’ homes, wearing an insulin pump, and more getting more pokes than anyone should have to have. It can also mean hospitalization, and Ryan has come far closer to death than I will ever feel comfortable with.

It also requires a level of bravery and courage that is unparalleled, as they prepare for a lifetime of all of these things–and more.  Today, Ryan wears an insulin pump, and is learning how to be a teenager with diabetes. He is doing well, and for that we are grateful, but we would love to find a cure!

For all of these reasons, the organization I’m highlighting today is Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, The Woodlands/Houston Chapter.

What is Step Out? Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes is the American Diabetes Association’s signature fundraising walk. The funds you raised through this event will help support local research, outreach programs and advocacy. This even has been taking place for over 20 years, and has collectively earned more than $175,000,000!!

There were 120 walk events last year, and each walk has its own personality and local flavor. The 2013 Step Out walk was just held on November 23, 2013 in The Woodlands, and with more than 3500 walkers, they had a goal to earn $500,000.  They came very close, and raised $401, 680.86.  They are still taking donations to meet their goal! By supporting Step Out, you make a difference in the fight against diabetes.  (source)
